My collaborator for the upcoming Songbook Series at Lincoln center writes:
For my third year in a row, I will have a song at the Holiday Songbook concert. For my first year, my song has nothing at all do with Jews. Nothing! As hard as this may be for some of you to believe, its true. So if youre Christian, come! If youre Jewish, come; after all, composer Steven Silverstein and lyricist me are both Jewish. If youre of a different faith or a non-believer (as the Prez would say), you may not like the concert too much. But comefor the performances and the fun. The holiday Songbook always gets the highest caliber talent of all the Songbooks, and not to disappoint, fresh from riding high in the national tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as Jemima Potts, Aly Brier will be singing The Truth About Santa. Arent you just dying to find out what it is? Im sure you are so note the following,
Date: Sunday, December 13, 2009
Time: 2:30 PM
Place: Bruno Walter Auditorium at The New York Public Library
for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center
Admission: FREE
Because its a Sunday, the main library may be closed that day (it was last year). You want to go to the side entrance at 111 Amsterdam Avenue. Its at around 64th Street. Via subway, take the 1 to 66th Street. Its right there. The concert will absolutely fill up. Its FREE. Thats right, FREE. Did you hear me? FREE. Last year, the house staff (library staff, umm) turned many people away. So, come early to get a seat. Let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you there! Happy holidays!

Our favorite nighttime host.
The colonel of nocturnal-
Joey Reynolds coast to coast.”
He broadcasts when it rains,
He broadcasts when it snows.
Hes always on the air,
Yes on and on he goes.

“THE FEARLESS AUDITION® – A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND”Is your community interested in gaining knowledge in how to prepare music for an audition; how to talk to an accompanist; how to sing a song from a music and dramatic perspective — and all taught from an experienced performing artist from New York City who has 15 years of experience in the field — On May 7 & 8th, Steven taught a workshop in Yelm, WA (an hour and a half outside of Seattle) entitled The Fearless Audition® – A New York State of Mind. For more information and pictures and quotes of what the participants thought, click here.

THE FEARLESS AUDITION® is a workshop aimed at preparing actors to conquer audition jitters and win the role! In short, it enables actors to become confident and well prepared in nailing the “scary” audition and getting the job.
The workshop will address the following topics:
- How to approach a song from both a musical perspective and a dramatic perspective;
- How to pick a 16 bar cut (excerpt) for an audition;
- How to properly warm-up – combining vocal exercises and dramatic intentions.
- How to develop good rehearsal techniques so that you don’t lose your voice (marking, sight reading music)
- How to get rid of tension when auditioning and become more assured during your audition.
- How to prepare the music to give to the pianist. Items discussed include: how to mark the tempo changes in the music; how to mark the cuts in the music; how to tape the music together; how to insert the proper cues for the pianist to follow.
- How to “speak” to the pianist in the room – the proper etiquette in dealing with the pianist
In short, the workshop will help enable the actor to become confident and well prepared in nailing the audition and getting the job!
It is taught by Steven Silverstein, who is a New York based vocal coach, accompanist, conductor, composer, audition pianist and teacher. He is featured as part of the book: Voice Teachers and Vocal Coaches of New York: The One and Only Guide.
In addition to the above topics covered, Steven will individually coach each student in front of the class and will address any specific problem the student might have.
The workshop is structured, either as a one- or two- day workshop so that students can participate according to their own individual needs.
On May 7 & 8, 2005, Steven taught such a workshop near Seattle, WA entitled The Fearless Audition®. The participants were passionate musical theater students ranging in age from 14-39.
After the workshop, some of the students said:
“This workshop helped me … mentally and physically connect to my lyrics.”
“I learned what underlying intentions are.”
“The workshop was fun and informative.”
“Steven does not just teach, he listens as well and empowers the students.”
“He is funny and perceptive.”
References available upon request.
Cost of the workshop depends on the number of participants.
